Unity, peace and development our goals - Democratic Unity Alliance

by Nadira Gunatilleke

Achieving unity, peace and development are the main objectives of the newly formed political party, the Democratic Unity Alliance (DUA), its National Organiser M.J.M. Muzzamil said yesterday.

"Our party has members from all political parties. They represent all communities. We will protect and continue the late Minister M.H.M. Ashraff's vision and mission which promote national unity and peace. We will test our strength during the forthcoming Provincial Council Elections by contesting the Colombo District in the Western Provincial Council," Muzzamil told the media.

He said that Minister Ashraff founded the National Unity Alliance to promote unity among communities. "But at present the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) walks in the opposite direction. Therefore we need to protect and promote the late leader's vision and mission."

"Since the death of Minister Ashraff the vision and mission of the SLMC changed several times according to different people's requirements. Nobody can call us `the descendants of the SLMC' because we did not resign from the SLMC. After Ashraff's death the SLMC was divided on four occasions.

The first task of the new leader of the SLMC was beating up and chasing away the National Unity Alliance from the SLMC. The SLMC is having problems because the leadership has different plans and objectives.

General Secretary, Democratic Unity Alliance, Hafiz Nazeer Ahmed said that the Democratic Unity Alliance would be led by a politburo. The top posts of the party are still vacant and suitable persons will be appointed to these posts after the forthcoming Provincial Council Elections.

"Our party is different from the other existing political parties. We will not change our plans even after winning the election. We will stick to our original manifesto," he added.

Some political parties vanish without a trace because they change their original plans after winning the election. Any political party in this country can successfully survive if they stick to their original plan after winning the election. We have a long way to go.

"We will become the third force in the country. We will get a minimum of five seats," he added.

The party's manifesto was launched during the press briefing.
