'Lanka-Cuba relations should be strengthened'

Southern Development Minister Ananda Kularatne who represented the Government at the Cuban National Day reception at Hotel Galadari said that Sri Lanka was one of the first countries which recognised Cuba immediately after the Cuban Revolution in 1959.

Che Guevera, then Cuba's Industry Minister visited Sri Lanka the same year to sign the friendship agreement with both countries. Sri Lanka-Cuba friendship relations should be further strengthened", he said.

Large number of Sri Lankans have undergone higher studies in medicine and engineering in Cuba. Also Cuban doctors and technicians have served in Sri Lanka - he added.

Many diplomats, professionals, politicians and representatives of organisations attended the reception hosted by Cuban Ambassador Ivonne Suarez Roche.
