by Florence Wickramage The Green Movement of Sri Lanka (GMSL) has urged the government to hold the implementation of the proposed Seaplane service to land on inland waters to promote Tourism. They have also urged that the government requests project proponents to submit a proper Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) as required under the National Environment Act and to place it for public scrutiny before the Central Environment Authority grants final approval. Chief Organiser Suranjan Kodituwakku said that the movement is of the view that landing seaplanes on internal waters is a threat to the environment. The proposed project is organised jointly by SriLankan Airlines and the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation. The GMSL has pointed out that despite the CEA requesting the Civil Aviation Authority to provide sufficient information for consideration for approval, a trial run has already taken place on November 12. The sea-plane scheduled to land at Lake Gregory at Nuwara Eliya had made an unexpected landing at the Victoria Reservoir. The project proponents had to abandon the original idea of the sea-plane landing at the Ibbankotuwa Lake at Dambulla, due to protests from the fishermen of the area. |
