Kumar takes early lead in open golf by Richard Dwight Amateur golfer J. J. Kumar, a national poolist, with a fine score of 68, three under par took an early lead at the 17th Sri Lanka Open Golf Championships which began yesterday at the Royal Colombo Golf Club. This tournament was initiated by golfing legends Pin Fernando and Dr. Lance Fernando in 1970 with the sole purpose of providing opportunities to caddies and employees of RCGC and NEGC. Since then it has been broadbased to include the Victoria golf and is also open to any nondescript individual to compete. The tournament this year is being organised by the Sri Lanka Golf Union with the main sponsor being United Tractors and Equipment Company Ltd., with yet others contributing generously. Apart from Kumar, three other amateur pool players have done creditably well - in J. M. D. Indika 70 one under par, M. Amparapatna 71, A. Arumugam 71, Nandasena Perera (professional) 71, Anura Rohana 72, Alan Gyi 73, B. A. Rohana 73, B. G. Lalith Kumara 73, Bithum Perera 73, D. Sellappa 74, G. A. Luxman 74 and G. Harrison 75. J. J. Kumar and J. M. D. Indika have done better than the two professionals Nandasena Perera and Anura Rohana in the first of 4 round of golf which ends on Thursday. The winner gets Rs. 40,000, the second Rs. 35,000, the third Rs. 30,000, the fourth 25,000 and the fifth 20,000. All coming within the first thirty will receive cash awards. |
