Britisher arrested for overstaying

Ilawali Police arrested a British national near the Amman Kovil in Ilawali for illegally overstaying in Sri Lanka.

The suspect, charged for violating immigration and emigration rules was released on two sureties of Rs 100,000 when produced before the Mallakam Magistrate's Court and ordered to appear in court on July 21.

Caught with rotten potatoes

Grandpass Police and Kolonnawa Municipal Council PHI arrested a suspect while transporting 8,290 kgs of rotten potatoes that was to be distributed to the market.

He was arrested following information received by the Police that the suspect, a resident of Grandpass was transporting the stock in a lorry.

He was produced before the Colombo Magistrate's court yesterday.

Injured in explosion at scrap metal collecting centre

A 17 year old boy was injured in an explosion at a scrap metal collecting centre in Ampara.The incident occurred when the boy, a son of the owner of the metal collecting shop in CC2, Central Camp, was piling scrap metal they had purchased on Monday. Police investigations revealed that a part of a mortar bomb that was with the scrap metal had exploded. The injured was admitted to the Ampara hospital.

Body found in river

Balangoda Police on Sunday found the body of a man who had been reported missing while crossing the Walawe Ganga in Maddekanda, Balangoda the previous day. The man was identified as 65 year old Siyadoris Appu of the same area.

Arrested with gun powder

A suspect was arrested in Namal Oya, Indiniyagala on the same day for illegally possessing 15 grammes of gun powder. He was produced in Ampara Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Two dead in bike,truck collision

Two soldiers of the General Services Corps 7 were killed when the motor bicycle they were riding collided head on with a tipper truck at KM 245 post on the A9 on Monday. B D Kasun Weeraratne ( 26 ) of Aralaganwila and A M Upul Pushpakumara Adikari ( 42 ) of Kurunegala died in the incident. The bodies were sent to the Kilinochchi Hospital morgue. Mankulam Police arrested the driver of the tipper truck and produced him before the Mullaitivu Magistrate's Court.

Two with heroin arrested

Kotahena Police on Monday arrested two suspects with 30.175 grammes of heroin in their possession at Melwatte and Modara. The first suspect was arrested with 20.105 grammes of heroin while the second was arrested acting on a tip off received by the Kotahena police. They were produced in Maligakanda Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Large scale illicit liquor brewery raided

Following a raid conducted by the Wennappuwa Police on a mass scale illicit liquor brewery at Nainamadama, a suspect was arrested and 300 bottles of illicit liquor, 10,800 drammes of goda, six empty barrels and six copper coils seized. The suspect was produced before the Marawila Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Lap top thieves caught

Two suspects who allegedly broke into the IT room of Kurunkalmadama Thaliepani MV in Kalawanchikudi to steal a laptop computer were arrested by the Kalawanchikudi Police on Monday. The stolen lap top was also recovered form their possession. The suspects were produced before the Kalawanchikudi Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Murder suspect on the run

Kebithigollewa Police have commenced an investigation in to the death of a 38 year old woman who had been hacked to death near her house at Etaweeragollewa in Kebithigollewa at around 9pm on Monday. M Premalatha died in the incident. The Police found a hatchet used in the crime and a motor bicycle on which the suspect had arrived. Further investigations revealed that the suspect, a friend of the deceased's husband had committed the crime after an argument with her while she was returning home after watching television at a nearby house. The suspect is reported to have fled the area. Investigations are continuing.

Man dies in attack

A 29 year old man died and another was critically injured when they were attacked by a group of persons in Pannala on Monday night. N K H Gayan Chanaka Fonseka of Paragammana was pronounced dead on admission to the Kuliyapitiya Hospital. The other is receiving treatment at the same hospital. Pannala Police arrested the owner of the house where the incident had taken place. Further investigations are continuing.
