SC says Local Authorities Filling of Vacancies Bill consistent with
constitution

The Speaker has been informed by the Supreme Court that the Local
Authorities Filling of Vacancies (Special Provision) Bill was not
inconsistent with the constitution.
Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody announced yesterday in Parliament
that the Supreme Court has decided and informed the Speaker by amending
the section 4 of the Bill, the Bill is not inconsistent with the
constitution.
Following the Cabinet of Minister decision that the Bill was of
national importance, President Mahinda Rajapaksa directed the Bill
before the Supreme Court for its decision.
The Supreme Court accordingly decided the Bill was not inconsistent
with the constitution. Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody announced
yesterday that a copy of the petition field before the Supreme Court
against the proposed 21st amendment to the constitution has been
received by the Speaker.
The twenty first amendment to the constitution moved by
Parliamentarian Ven. Aturaliye Rathana Thera was for the abolition of
the13th amendment to the constitution.
Ven Athuraliye Ratana Thera moved the 21st amendment to the
constitution as a private member's Bill.
