HelpAge imroves eye care services for needy
The HelpAge Sri Lanka- Eye Care Centre (HASL-ECC) enhanced their eye
care services by introducing the ‘ Phaco Method of Cataract Surgeries’
with Foldable Intraocular Lenses (IOL’s ). The surgeries are performed
free for needy senior citizens over 55 years at the HASL-ECC.
This is the first time the HASL-ECC will use foldable IOL’ with the
state of the art technology in order to improve the quality and the
standard of services, provided by the HelpAge Eye Care Centre at Sinsapa
Road , Wellawatta, Colombo 6. The HelpAge Eye Care Centre was set up 11
years ago and during this period over 25,000 cataract surgeries have
been performed for needy elders who live, especially in country’s rural
and remote areas.
The Foldable Intraocular Lenses are imported to Sri Lanka under the
supervision of the vision 2020 programme the Ministry of Health. HASL,
Executive Director, Samantha Liyanawaduge said HelpAge Sri Lanka has
organized over 250 eye and medical camps for elderly citizens in the
country and over 2500 needy elders underwent cataract surgeries free of
charge from its Eye Care Centre during the past twelve months.
He said, although ' Phaco Method of Cataract Surgeries’ with Foldable
Intraocular Lenses are highly expensive, HelpAge Sri Lanka has decided
to perform all cataract surgeries with the improved quality of lenses
for needy elderly citizens free of charge from July 01, 2013.
Manager , HASL-ECC , Ajith Dias said statistics reveal about 25
percent elders in the country suffer from blindness due to cataract and
this situation prompted the HelpAge Sri Lanka to perform these surgeries
for needy elders free of charge at its hospital. |
