Records tumble at CP meet

A number of Central Provincial Athletic meet records on the fourth
day of the Central Province schools athletic championship organised by
the Department of Education and Central Province and worked off at the
Bogambara Stadium, Kandy for the fourth successive day.
At the end of the fourth day it was Walala Central College, Trinity
College, Mahamaya Girls College and St. Sylvester’s College who appear
to be in the front but they will receive stiff challenge from the other
schools.
The records which were lowered yesterday were in the under 17, 400
metres hurdles, under 17 triple jump, under 17 long jump in the events
for boys. Two records were also lowered in the championship for girls in
under 19, 5,000 metres and under 21 discuss throw.
G.K.B.H. Perera of Trinity College time 58.8 seconds in the 400
metres hurdles to set up a new mark.
Dilshan Nimantha of Ginigathena Central College had a leap of 52
metres to establish a new record in boys under 17 triple jump.
The third record to go was in the under 17 boys long jump when W.M.D.
Kavindu of Poramadulla Central College had a leap of 6.48 metres to set
up a new mark. In the championship for girls H.T.I.K. Liyanage of
Berrewaerts College, Ampitiya threw the discuss to a distance of 30.20
metres to establish a new record in the girls under 21 age group
category.
The last record to go in the day was in the girls under 19, 5,000
metres long distance running by K.D.P. Kumarage of Pushpadana Maha
Vidyalaya, Ambatenna with a timing of 18.37.9 minutes. A notable feature
was tat most of the records were set up by the athletes from the village
schools.
