Vas Gunawardana's wife warned

Additional Magistrate A.M.Sahabdeen yesterday warned Shayamali
Priyadharshanie Perera, the wife of former DIG Vas Gunawardana, recently
interdicted by the IGP on an allegation of murder of a wealthy
businessman, not to interfere with witnesses and also with ongoing
investigations in any manner.
This is sequel to a further report filed earlier by ASP Shanie Abeysekera of the CID that she had telephoned the wife of
A.P.Sarathchandra a policeman held in custody, to urge her husband not
to come forward as a witness for
the prosecution, besides requesting a telephone number of a member of
the suspects' family.
Attorney at Law Ajith Pathirana appearing for Shayamali
Priyadharshanie Perera submitted that the security of the former DIG had
been withdrawn, and the lives of his client and her son, the only
inmates in the household, are under threat.
"The four policemen currently held in custody are from the staff of
the former DIG, hence his family had developed a close relationship with
the suspects.
"The 25 telephone calls given by his client had been an outcome of
this connection. "An undertaking was given that henceforth , no
telephone calls whatsoever would be entertained
The suspect policeman on issue had under the Criminal Procedure Code
made a confession to the Magistrate as stated in the B report.
"Apart from that, the purported threat made by Vas Gunawardana to the
CID is a lie uttered with ulterior motives," counsel submitted.
In reply to a query, the Magistrate told counsel that his client is
not required to appear on July 9, the next date of the non summary
inquiry.
