Palmyra trees underutilized

There are 11 million Palmyra trees in the country but only 2 percent of these trees are utilized for commercial purposes, said Palmyra Development Board Chairman Pasupathi Sivaratnam.

He said there are 3.6 million palmyra trees in the Jaffna district, 2.7 million trees in the Batticaloa district while the rest of the trees are in the Trincomalee, Ampara, Killinochchi, Mannar, Mullaitivu and Hambantota districts.

He was addressing a press conference in Batticaloa recently.
