Galle district loses paddy target

Targeted extent of paddy fields could not be cultivated during the Yala season in the Galle district owing to the adverse weather conditions and other social factors such as rapid escalation of labour costs and marketing setbacks, said Assistant Agriculture Director Thamara Puspalatha.

She made these observations at the Galle district Agriculture Committee Meeting presided over by district secretary Ravindra Hewavitharane at Galle district secretariat recently.

Only 4,800 hectares of paddy out of the anticipated 12,800 hectares could be cultivated, she said.
