No fertilizer shortage

There is no fertilizer shortage in the country, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane informed the media on Wednesday at the Ministry.

The Minister said there was a delay in distributing the chemical fertilizer stocks for the Yala season due to a delay in the shipments but the problem has been solved. Farmers who need additional fertilizer could purchase their requirements from government fertilizer stores.

The Minister called upon farmers to reduce the use of chemical fertilizer in the wake of the growth of Non Communicable Diseases, such as, Diabetics and kidney disease.

The minister said that most of the developed countries have reduced the use of chemical fertilizer and there is a big demand for organically produced agriculture products in these countries.
