Teak logs seized

A load of teak logs concealed in cattle manure transported in a tractor trailer was intercepted by the Karadiyanaru Police in the Batticaloa District recently. The Karadiyanaru Police said the arrest was made on a tip-off. Police said the driver and vehicle were produced before court.


Agriculture exhibition

The National Agricultural Exhibition 2013 will be held from July 6 to 10 at the Wariyapola Agricultural Training Institute under the patronage of Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana.

The exhibition will be opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on July 6 at 10.46 am.

The exhibition aims to identify talented farmers in rural areas, train and guide them to uplift their livelihoods. Souvenirs and gifts will be awarded to them.

Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa, Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena and Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma will participate.


Rohana Dissanayaka Challenge Cup

Rohana Dissanayaka Foundation has made arrangements to hold a cricket tournament named the 'Rohana Dissanayaka Challenge Cup' on June 29 and 30 at Silwathgala grounds in Beliyakanda area of the Galewela DS division.

Organizers said several teams will participate in this tournament while valuable prizes will be awarded for winners. Deputy Transport Minister Rohana Dissanayake will be the chief guest at the opening ceremony.


Environmental exhibition

Soba Kekulu, the environmental exhibition organized by the Western Provincial Environment Ministry will be held from today to June 29 from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm daily at the M D H Jayawardena Vidyalaya in Thalangama North.

Schools in the Kaduwela Educational Division of the Sri Jayewardenapura Educational Zone participate.

The exhibition will be opened by Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena, Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa and Western Provincial Council Minister Upali Kodikara respectively on June 27, 28 and 29 with the participation of Western Provincial Council Environment Minister Udaya Gammanpila.


Alleged offenders held

Nine persons were arrested by Rathgama Police in respect of alleged offences of having heroin, illicit liquor and cannabis in their possession in raids on Poson Full Moon Poya day.

The suspects were residents of Boossa, Mawadawila, Maliduwa, Ranapanadeniya and Dadella area. Investigations revealed that five suspects are noted illicit liquor dealers and the other four are drug addicts.


STF officer arrested over death threat

A Colombo Special Task Force Officer was arrested by Galle Police for allegedly inflicting death threat on a family in Mahamodara, Galle.

The police who responded swiftly to a phone call given by the householder to the Police Emergency Call Unit have made the arrest. The suspect is being interrogated, Police said.


Heavy fine for power pirate

A man who pleaded guilty to the charge of illegally obtaining electricity by manipulating the power metre of his house was fined Rs 164,221 by Angunakolapelessa Magistrate Pasan Amarasena. Rs.10,000 was court fine and Rs 154,221 was compensation due to the CEB for the revenue loss.

CEB Special Investigation Division Officials and Hungama Police jointly conducted the raid.


Prison inmate dies of kidney disease

An inmate of the Tangalle prison died of a kidney disease at the Tangalle Base Hospital. The magisterial inquiry was held by Tangalle Magistrate K. T.U.DE. Silva. The body was transferred to the Matara General Hospital for the post-mortem.


Teak logs seized

A lorry transporting teak logs hidden among sacks of cut piece cloths was nabbed by Embilipitiya forest officials and Ambalantota Police officials at Kakkangoda, Embilipitiya. The logs are worth Rs 1,500,000. The lorry driver and the helper were taken into custody.


Police Bakthi Gee

Police Bakthi Gee organised by the Police Family Welfare Society, would be held this evening at 5.00 pm at the Finger Print Bureau Auditorium at Torrinton Place, Colombo 7. President of the Welfare Association, N. Sarangi Illangakoon would be the chief guest.
