'Immediate solution to eradicate kidney disease a must'

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane requested scientists to
find an immediate solution for the eradication of the kidney disease
from the country.
The minister made this request while participating at the Scientific
Forum - Multi-factor issues on Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Origin
(CKDU) in connection to food dietary habits identification held
yesterday at the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research and Training
Institute.
Addressing the occasion, Minister Abeywardane said the government did
everything possible to identify the reasons for the spread of this
disease and also to find a solution to eradicate the disease from the
country by spending much money. But still there had been no permanent
solution found.
Participating on the occasion, Kalutara District Parliamentarian
Vidura Wickramanayake said that it was necessary provide more funding
for more research studies. But now it was important that a solution be
found to eradicate this disease without wasting more time on finding the
reason. "We have to regain certain habits and dietary patterns that we
had ignored with the development of the country," he said.
Agriculture Ministry Secretary W. Sakalasooriya, Additonal Secretary
D. B. T. Wijeratne, University Academics, Health Ministry officials,
Doctors and Institution Heads participated on the occasion.
