Port fire:

Details of cargo destroyed to be revealed

The Ports Authority will reveal the details of the cargo in CFS 1 warehouse, destroyed in the Colombo Port fire a few weeks ago, a Ports Authority spokesman said.

He said investigations are being carried out to ascertain the cause of the fire and therefore it will get a few more days to disclose the details of the destroyed cargo.

The spokesman said as a part of the process, the importers whose cargo were lying in the warehouse were asked to list out their goods.

"Based on these lists, further action in this regard will be taken," he said.Meanwhile, the Small Importers' Association leveled allegations that the Ports Authority has failed to reveal details of the cargo stored in the destroyed warehouse. Asked from the Ports Authority spokesman about the delay of revealing details of the destroyed cargo, he said the process was in progress. Meanwhile, two officers of a mercantile firm were arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) following the revelation made in the government analyst's report to the Police that the fire was due to a chemical reaction inside a cargo consignment.

Such cargo are kept in a separate cargo warehouse. The suspects had not declared the content to customs when they imported the consignment.
