DIG Vass Gunawardena may be stripped of rank

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Vass Gunawardena, arrested and remanded for allegedly aiding and abetting in the murder of a businessman, is likely to lose his post, Police sources said.

Inspector General of Police N.K. Ilangakoon sent a report to Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa seeking interdiction of DIG Gunawardena.

DIG Gunawardena was remanded until June 25 on the suspicion of committing a series of serious crimes, mainly contract killings, abduction and soliciting ransom. The IGP's report needs to be approved by the Defecne Secretary and the Public Services Commission before the interdiction can be made valid, the sources said.

Meanwhile, DIG Gunawardena who was being treated at the Colombo National Hospital was transferred to the Prisons Hospital.
