Participating as the Chief Guest at the inauguration ceremony of
Construction Expo 2013, Sri Lanka’s premier construction machinery,
technology supplies and service exhibition held at the BMICH from June
14 to 16 for the second consecutive year, the minister said: “Our
history had provided us immense opportunities for the betterment of the
country. But due to certain circumstances, we couldn’t make maximum use
of these opportunities. Sri Lanka is a country with an ideal geological
location, bio diversity, weather and climatic condition, culture and
people who are able to adapt to the changing situation in the world.”
Weerawansa said the country’s construction sector recorded a 21
percent growth last year, which was the highest growth rate achieved
after gaining independence.
“Earlier, the growth rate remained between five and six percent. With
heavy emphasis laid on infrastructure development in the country
together with the booming economy, Sri Lanka has been seen as one of the
most potent destinations for all construction related equipment and
services,” Chairman of the organising committee of the exhibition
Mahanama Jayamanna said.
“The rapid development projects that have been planned and forecast
by the government which include major expansion and investment in the
North together with continuous emphasis on development in the south, has
made the island a hub for all stakeholders related to the industry,” he
said.
Jayamanna said the exhibition, therefore is set to cater to all
markets and stakeholders making it a central meeting point network,
exchange technologies and ideas, and expand their products portfolios
and services to keep in line with the rapid progress in development
witnessed across the country.
Ceylon Institute of Builders president Rohan Karunaratne and local
and foreign guests participated on the occasion. |
