Schoolchildren in remote areas get bicycles
Irangika Range
Over 750 new bicycles will be distributed among underprivileged
schoolchildren selected from remote areas in the Matara district.
Around 250 bicycles were distributed under the first stage of the
programme, among schoolchildren at a ceremony held under the patronage
of Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma at
the Matara Municipal Council.
The 250 bicycles were distributed among students faced with transport
difficulties when attending schools to encourage them to frequently
attend schools in the Matara district.
The Private Transport Services Ministry in collaboration with the
National Transport Commission initiated the project called Sisu Seriya
to provide free bicycles to students in remote areas inconvenienced due
to a poor public transport service.
Under this programme, around 3,150 schoolchildren in remote areas in
Anuradhapura, Ampara, Batticaloa, Kilinochchi, Kinniya, Hambantota,
Nuwaraeliya, Kotmale, Hanguranketha, Trincomalee, Monaragala and Matara
were provided new bicycles free of charge. |
