False SMSs doing the rounds

The Police requested the public not to be deceived by false SMS messages about lottery draws.

The Police said it recently received a large number of complaints of lottery scams through SMS by certain groups in the guise of personnel attached to private telecommunication companies.

The public who lodged complaints had said they received SMS messages stating to deposit a certain amount of money to a given bank account number as either registration fee or transportation fee to receive the lottery prizes.

The telecommunication companies conduct various competitions among their customers and offer various prizes.

The Police said certain elements used these opportunities to deceive people in to parting with money.

The Police requested the public to be vigilant of such acts and to verify the information through the respective company if they receive such an SMS.

The Police requested the public to inform them on such SMSs or calls.
