Falling jak fruit kills infant

A one-year-old infant was killed by a falling jak fruit. The victim was identified as Krisha Gihani, a resident of Bubula Road in Pasyala. Giving evidence at the inquest held on June 14 by Additional City Coroner Ashroff Rumy, the infants’s father Nishantha Jayasinghe said on the day of the incident, the child’s grandmother had carried her to the garden.

A jack fruit had fallen on the infant’s head and she was rushed to Wathuprirwala Hospital and later to the National Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, he said.

The postmortem attributed the death to Cranio cerebral injuries.

A verdict of accidental death was returned.
