Two drown

Weerambugedara Police on Tuesday found the body of an elderly person floating in the Rekawa canal in Piduruwella.

The person was identified as 85-year- old J A Simon Sinno of Indulgodakanda. The post-mortem carried out at the Kurunegala hospital revealed the cause of the death as suffocation.

Meanwhile, Damana Police and Navy divers commenced a search operation to find the body of a youth who drowned while bathing in Malagedi Wewa on Wednesday evening. Praboda Madawa, 20, faced the mishap.


Illegal satinwood stock seized

Inginiyagala Police, on a tip-off, arrested a driver while transporting a stock of illegally felled satinwood logs worth Rs 400,000 at Rathmalgahaella on Tuesday. Interrogation revealed he was transporting the timber stock to Kattankudi. He was produced before the Ampara magistrate yesterday.


Cab causes chaos injuring two

Two motorcyclists were critically injured when a double cab went out of control and hit a van which caused the van to collid another car, three wheeler and two motor bicycles on Base Line road in Borella on Wednesday evening.

The two motorcyclist were admitted to Colombo National Hospital. Borella Police arrested the driver of the double cab. Further investigations continue.


Man arrested with heroin

Welikada Police arrested a suspect with 3.500 grams of heroin in his possession near the Bandarayakapura Flats on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old suspect, a resident of Borella was produced before the Aluthkade no 4 Magistrate's Court yesterday.


Man held with shot gun and explosives

Wewalwatte Police arrested a suspect with a 12 bore shot gun, four bullets, a hand grenade, 700 grams of explosive powder and a detonating thread in his possession at Rathgaha on Wednesday night.

The 45-year-old suspect is a resident of Nilwala, Thudawa.

He was produced before the Ratnapura Magistrate's Court yesterday.


Human smuggling attempt foiled

Kattankudi Police arrested 11 suspects while awaiting to get on board a boat to migrate illegally to another country at Kattankudi beach.

The organizer of the smuggling attempt was also arrested.

The suspects are residents of Palali, Karawetti, Chavakachcheri, Wadukottei and Kattankudi.

Police also seized a stock of bottled water, dried food and medicine from their possession. Police are investigating.
