Local BTI bacteria to fight dengue

Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) officials used locally made BTI bacteria for the first time in Sri Lanka yesterday. The local BTI bacteria was sprayed near the Colombo National Hospital yesterday.

CMC Chief Health Officer Dr Pradeep Kariyawasam said public support to end the mosquito menace was not satisfactory.

"Many officials engaged in mosquito curbing programmes are frequently either beaten up or threatened," he said. A joint mission is being implemented in Colombo in collaboration with the Defence Ministry, Health Ministry and CMC Health Department to combat the dengue menace and encourage public participation in eradicating dengue from Colombo, Dr.Kariyawasam said.
