DIG Vaas Gunawardena admitted to hospital

Colombo DIG Vaas Gunawardena who was arrested in connection with the alleged murder of a businessman was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital yesterday, after he complained of chest pains.

Colombo National Hospital Deputy Director Dr. Cyril de Silva stated that he was admitted to a medical ward of the Colombo National Hospital.

Though the patient complained of a chest pain his general health is sound. The Deputy Director said Gunawardena's health condition was being monitored.

"I knew that you would do this to me. But You cannot keep me for ever." Threatening vengeance he said " Once I come out look what you shall get" ( Mama eliyata ave davasata balaganilla Umbalata Karanade).

Furthermore, the the families of those conducting investigations had being threatened.

The five police suspects and two civilians were taken into custody by the Police Special Investigations Unit on a complaint into the abduction and killing of businessman Mohomed Azamdeen Siyam an owner of a shoe assembly establishment.

The suspects are also facing the allegation of aiding and abetting the crime.

The CID further informed that the killing was on oral orders. The businessman's body was later found at a lonely spot in Domppe.

Suspect Krishantha Vishvaraj in a statement to CID said that on the day of the incident at about 7.00 pm, one Prasanna Anurada Edirisinghe and he (Krishantha) had gone in a van to the Nedimala residence of DIG Vas Gunawardena.The van had traveled to Nugegoda Kandawate and stopped . There had being another vehicle. There the suspect Mohomed Fausdeen Mufaleek met the suspect Krishantha. Fausdeen had told Krishantha "take him " (Arayava ganna) .

In response Siyam was taken out of a cab parked about 20 meters meters away.

The CID informed that the blood samples found from the scene of murder was forwarded to the Government Analyst.

Besides two finger prints along with a palm print were found in the vehicle.

Attorney at Law Ajith Pathirana appearing for the suspect filing preliminary objections submitted that the DIG is held with hardcore criminals . His life is in danger. Moreover he had being taken into custody in an unlawful manner.

Besides he is sick.

ASP Shanie Abeysekara assisted by IP M.A.S. Ranjith Munasinghe prosecuted. Investigations were conducted by SI Lakmina Indika Bamunusinghe, PC Wasantha , PC 68656 Sarathchandra and PC 61816 Dissanayake. The non summary hearings was postponed for June 25.
