Coal power plant coming up in SP

Arrangements are in place to set up another coal power plant in the Southern Province at a cost of US $ 500 million which is to be borne by the Japanese government, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Chairman W. B. Ganegala said.

The new coal power plant to be established in the Southern Province will add another 500 Mega Watts to the national grid. He said the Japanese government had made this offer when President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited Japan in March.

A location to set up this new coal power plant is yet to be decided, he said.

A survey is on to decide a site suitable for the construction of the coal power plant, Ganegala said.

“Work on this new power plant project is expected to commence by the end of this year and will be completed within one and half years,” he said.
