People have freedom to enjoy Vesak – Dr Herath

The people have been given the opportunity to celebrate Vesak freely and peacefully due to the conclusion of the prolonged war in the country, Mass Media and Information Ministry Secretary Dr. Charitha Herath said. He said people today can walk on the streets freely to view Vesak decorations without fear, adding that the nation achieved its ‘second independence’ in 2009.

ANCL Chairman and Managing Director Bandula Padmakumara, Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) Chief Enterprise and Wholesale Officer Kiththi Perera and SLT Chief Marketing Officer Roshan Kaluarachchi are seen switching on the lights to declare open the third and final day of the Amadahara Vesak Zone yesterday. The Amadahara Vesak Zone was organized by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) for the 23rd year in succession. Sri Lanka Telecom sponsored the event while TV Derana and FM Derana were the electronic media sponsors. Presidential Coordinating Secretary and Director Operations Upul Dissanayake, ANCL Director Editorial Seelarathna Senarath and General Manager Abhaya Amaradasa were also present. Picture by Lalith C. Dr. Herath said it was the sacrifices made by War Heroes and the wise leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa which paved way for this achievement. “Some have forgotten these achievements. Some who act without any feeling for the country attempt to destabilize the country and mislead the public by using topics such as the electricity tariff issue,” he said.

Dr Herath said Lake House, which carried out its duties right along during every decisive situation in the country, has secured a special place in the media field.

He commended the conduct of Lake House during the humanitarian operation as well as many crisis situations, adding that the Daily News, the Observer, Dinamina, Silumina and Thinakaran acted with responsibility during these times.

He observed certain media have disregard their responsibility, adding that certain private media have their own agenda. Dr Herath also stressed the importance of self-regulation among journalists. The Secretary made this observation while participating in the illumination of the Amadahara Vesak Zone on Saturday, organised for the 23rd time.

Lake House Chairman and Managing Director and veteran journalist Bandula Padmakumara and members of the Board also participated. A Bakthi gee recital was also conducted. The Amadahara Vesak Zone was sponsored by Sri Lanka Telecom while Derana TV provided the media sponsorship.

Editorial Director Seelaratna Senarath said Lake House always worked for the well-being of the society.

He said Lake House maintains a close relationship with the Mass Media and Information Minister and the Ministry Secretary while making its contribution to take the country forward in the development sphere.
