EGB e-library stimulates young minds of Poojapitiya
Elephant House Ginger Beer (EGB) changed the futures of many in the
ginger farming community of Poojapitiya, a village off Kandy, when the
Poojapitiya Primary School's e- library was declared open. These
students probably never entertained dreams of developing any IT skills,
but all that has changed.
They will now gain a solid foundation in IT and access to jobs in IT
and IT related fields which command some of the highest starting
salaries both locally and globally.
Poojapitiya has a special significance to Elephant House since the
farming community in that area supplies the ginger that is used in
manufacturing EGB.
Generations of loyal consumers have come to appreciate the unique
taste of EGB which is a direct result of the high quality and freshness
of the ginger that goes into every bottle.
The children of the Poojapitiya ginger farming community, though
young in age, no doubt feel a sense of pride in the agricultural
occupation of their families.
Enhancing this sense of pride and channelling that towards widening
their knowledge which would ultimately improve their lifestyle was the
objective behind the donation of this e-library.
Equipped with computers, multi-media projectors, internet facilities
and much more, the e-library would enable the kids to take advantage of
the wealth of knowledge available out there, including local educational
sites such as 'e-thaksalawa'.
It was declared open by Education Minister and Chief Minister of the
Central Province, Sarath Ekanayake and Jit Gunaratne, President of John
Keells Holdings Consumer Foods Sector. Guneratne speaking at the opening
ceremony said, "It is a great joy to see the eager faces of these little
ones before me, so keen to obtain a good education and carve out
successful lives for themselves.
We are proud to be a part of their journey and help them to take
advantage of developing technology and become true global citizens. " |
