Ceremonial Sitting today

A ceremonial sitting to welcome Justice Rohini Marasinghe to the Supreme Court will be held today.

The welcome ceremony will be held at the Supreme Court Auditorium at 10a m with Chief Justice Mohan Peiris presiding. Justices of Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and other lower Courts will be present to welcome Justice Marasinghe who had served as Judge of the High Court and as a Judge of the Appeal Court until her appointment to the Supreme Court in April this year.


International Conference in August

An International Conference on Economic Development, Joint Venture Partnerships and Eco Tourism has been organized by the Business and Professional Women Sri Lanka from August 10 to 12 at the BMICH.

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa, Investment Promotion Minister Lashman Yapa Abeywardena and Board of Investment (BOI) Chairman Dr Lakshman Jayaweera are to participate in this event as chief guests.

The main objective of the conference is to form joint venture partnerships in business, commerce, infrastructure development, tourism and information technology.

The conference facilitates business to business opportunities amongst the participants in coordination with the BOI, Export Development Board, Sri Lanka Tourist Board and other relevant authorities.


Rehabilitated jetty opens

The rehabilitated Passaiyeer landing jetty was opened by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa and Minister Douglas Devananda. IOM officers were also present. This jetty was rehabilitated at a cost of Rs 59 million by IOM American International Development Management.

Two hundred and fifty six fishing boats could be anchored at the jetty at once at the rehabilitated jetty.

The boats are safeguarded from violent gales and in the event of rough sea inside the landing pier.


Nineteen passengers hospitalized

Twelve passengers including nine women were hospitalized when a private bus traveling from Elapatha to Ratnapura skidded and toppled into a precipice in Getamanna in Ratnapura.

The injured were admitted to the Ratnapura hospital. The driver of the bus was arrested by the Ratnapura Police who are continuing further investigations. Meanwhile on Monday another private bus went off the road and crashed into a parapet wall near the 25 mile post on the Haputale-Welimada main road, injuring nine passengers including two children. They were admitted to Diyatalawa, Boralanda and Haputale hospitals.
