SL beat Canada at Commonwealth TT
Sri Lankan women's paddlers beat Canada 3-1 in their first round
meeting on the opening day and secured a place among the top eight teams
of the 19th Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship's women's Team
Championship as the tournament commenced on Sunday (May 5) in New Delhi,
India.
Nuwani Vithanage bounced back from an early setback to beat her
Canadian opponent Shirley FU (7/11, 5/11, 11/3, 11/7, 11/7). Ishara
Madurangi lost her first singles against Sara Yuen (11/6, 8/11, 9/11,
14/12, 8/11) but came back strongly to overcome Shirley FU easily in the
other singles where she win the game in straight sets (11/5, 11/9,
14/12). The other Sri Lankan girl Pavani Sirisena received a walkover
from the Canadian opponent. The Local girls went down to India 3/0 in
their other Team Championship game.
Sri Lankan men's team is yet to be blessed with a victory as they
have lost two first round games of the men's Team Championship against
Scotland and Wales in similar fashioned clean sweeps (3/0).
