Gampaha hit by rains

Gampaha district has been badly affected by the prevailing rainy weather conditions.

Around 2,212 people from 479 families in the Wattala area have been affected by floods caused by torrential rains. Of these, 331 persons from 81 families are housed at the Welikadamulla Siddhartha College and relatives. Cooked meals were provided by the DS Office, Disaster Management Centre sources said.

Another six persons in Laggala in the Matale district have been affected by lightning related incidents and 14 persons in Akurana and Koralaya areas have been affected by heavy rains and strong winds. According to reports 2,232 persons belonging to 484 families in Gampaha, Kandy and Matale districts have been affected from the prevailing rainy weather condition. Meanwhile, Meteorological Department Duty Forecaster Prabodini Karunapala said wet weather conditions will continue throughout the country for another week due to the atmospheric disturbances close to Sri Lanka.

"Thundershowers can be expected, especially during the afternoon and night.

Sri Lanka is currently experiencing inter monsoonal weather conditions and the Southwest monsoon is expected by the end of May," she said.
