Renovation of the collapsed staircase at the National Museum, Colombo
has to be carried out under the purview of the Archaeological Department
as suggested by the committee report, National Heritage Ministry sources
said.
The Committee Report about the collapse of the staircase in the
National Museum was presented to National Heritage Minister Jagath
Balasuriya by the Committee Chairman and National Heritage Ministry
Additional Secretary D J Samarasinghe on April 19, Ministry sources
said.
According to the Committee recommendation, the collapse of the
staircase was due to decay.
According to the recommendation of the committee, National Heritage
Minister Jagath Baalasuriya has requested the Ministry Secretary to take
immediate action to renovate the staircase.
Further, the Minister requested that steps need to be taken to open
the upper floor for the public immediately.
The National Museum Building is an archaeological monument and is
over 137 years old. Therefore, the staircase is in urgent need of
repairs under the direction of the Archaeological Department.
The Archaeological Director General will recommend the most suitable
type of wood required for the task.
Furthermore, all wooden buildings at the National Museum have to be
inspected by the relevant institution, the appointed Committee has
decided. |
