Hemal Mendis dies

The death occurred of former Cambrian Sportsman Hemal Mendis (Snr) on
Tuesday (April 16) and his funeral took place on Wednesday at
Moratumulla Methodist Church cemetery in the midst of a large gathering
after the service at Methodist Church Moratumulla.
He had his entire education at Prince of Wales' College and played
for the under 12, 14, 16 and first eleven cricket teams. He was a member
of the first eleven cricket team which lost the Big Match to their arch
rivals Sebs in 1962 under Hayasti Aponso. His elder brother Suranjith
led the Combrians to victory in 1959 Big Match and his younger brother
Asith too played for the first eleven. In addition he won Soccer,
Volleyball and Table Tennis colours and was a senior cadet. He leaves
his wife Maureen and son Niloshan.
