St Anthony’s girls win under 14 tourney

St Anthony’s Girls College swamped Mahamaya Girls College, Kandy 34-9
to win the under 14 Kandy District Girls Schools basketball championship
by St Anthony’s Girls College as a part of their 75th Anniversary
celebrations and played at their Basketball Courts at Katugastota (St
Anthony’s BV Courts) At half time the Antonians Girls led 21-3.
The winners celebrated their 75th Anniversary in a grand way by
winning this championship in a very convincing manner.
Spearheading the Antonians girls was their sharp shooting forward
Aruni Wijekoon who collected 14 points followed by Janani Nayodara (8)
and skipper Sandunika Bandara (6). For the Mahamayers Aparna Jayakoddy
contributed 6 points.
The individuals awards went as follows.
Best Defensive player: Janani Nayodara (St Anthony’s GS)
Best Offensive Player: Aparna Jayakoddy (Mahamaya)
Most Valuable Player: Aruni Wijekoon (St Anthony’s GS)
In the semi-finals St Anthony’s Girls Schools ‘A’ beat St Anthony’s
Girls College ‘B’ 49-12 and Mahamaya Girls College beat Colombo
International School, Kandy 19-16.
St Anthony’s Girls College added more glitter to their success by
winning the consolation finals defeating Colombo International School
13-6.
President of Sri Lanka Basketball Federations and Chief Minister of
the Central Province Sarath Ekanayake who was the chief guest speaking
on the occasion said that steps will be taken to make basketball more
popular in the country by conducting coaching clinics and developing the
existing courts with the latest equipment with the assistance of the
Sports Ministry. He paid glowing tribute to the principal of the school
Ms Pathma Lekamge for organizing this basketball championship.
