Thirteen thousand new houses are being built for low income families
and slum dwellers in Colombo and the suburbs under the Samata Niwasak -
Hisata Sevanak programme of the Mahinda Chinthanaya policy framework,
said Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities
Deputy Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna in parliament yesterday.
The houses constructed under the first phase will be handed over to
the needy by August, he said.
The cost of each house would be Rs 3 million. The full ownership of
the housing unit with a deed, will be provided for them, he said.
Meanwhile, plans are afoot to complete the construction of 20,000
housing units for slum dwellers and low income families by the year end.
The deputy minister said the government has allocated Rs 1,790 million
from 2011 to construct 20 flats comprising 40,000 housing units in
Colombo and the suburbs to solve the housing problem of slum dwellers in
the Colombo city. Construction work on ten flats has commenced while
work on one flat has been completed.
