Bi–Directional testing of high capacity test pile at Krrish project

Geotech successfully conducted the first Bi-Directional testing of a high capacity test pile on April 4 ,2013, at the prestigious Krrish Luxury Lifestyles Project to evaluate the ultimate load carrying capacity and other relevant parameters of the test pile, in association with M/S Walkers Piling (Pvt) Limited who were responsible for the construction of the pile and field installation.

The data gathered will be invaluable for the geotechnical and structural engineers to optimize their foundation design for this ambitious project, with towers reaching over 250 meters (90 storeys) to the Colombo Sky line.

The test which incorporated four hydraulic jacks embedded in the concrete pile, with an assortment of other sensors, stressed the pile to nearly 5,000 tons and generated a wide spectrum of data on the load carrying capacity of the soil strata and the basement rock.

As Colombo’s skyline changes with ever taller buildings standing on piled foundations it becomes important that design engineers are equipped with reliable, convenient and economical means to ensure the efficacy of their designs, leading to cost effective foundations for the development projects.

Thus the Bi-Directional Test will definitely have a very significant impact on the construction industry.

Geotech is justifiably proud to have been able to periodically pioneer the introduction of other such methods for evaluating the condition of piles by state of the art electronic pile testing techniques such as the Pile Integrity Test (PIT), Pile Dynamic Analysis (PDA) Test and Cross Hole Analysis (CHA) Test. These techniques which can be incorporated in the design stage itself, enable the optimization of the designs supported by additional data, which cannot be gained from the traditional static load tests.

Geotech Group, comprising of Geotech (Pvt) Ltd., Geotech Testing Services (Pvt) Ltd. and Group Engineering Laboratories (Pvt) Ltd., are proud to have been chosen with Walkers Piling (Pvt) Ltd to conduct this test with support and the technical expertise of Strainstall Sdn Bhd of Malaysia.

Geotech is thankful to the management of Krrish Transworks Colombo (Pvt) Ltd. for the opportunity given to provide our services and to introduce this valuable test to support the industry and infrastructure development in Sri Lanka. A technical discussion has been arranged to disseminate the details of the test method to geotechnical and structural engineers as well as piling contractors and project developers.
