Food for poor schoolchildren: call to formulate scheme to levy fee
from rich
The All Ceylon Union of English Teachers requested President Mahinda
Rajapaksa to formulate a scheme to levy a fee from the rich to provide
food for poor schoolchildren.
The Union in a release noted that although there is free education
from Grade one to university, a large number of students do not benefit.
"The Union is confident that if a scheme to provide food for
schoolchildren is implemented, more children would attend school," the
release said.
The Union's Secretary General M A Stanley recalled that the Union was
was responsible in getting free textbooks for children from 1979.
