SLTB raids net huge income

The Central Mobile Investigation Unit of the Sri Lanka Transport Board earned over Rs 1,925,918 from raids and inspections last year.

Special Investigation Unit Director Upali Gunasekara attached to SLTB said the number of raids and inspections carried out last year was 9,520.

He said over 5,569 persons who traveled in SLTB buses without tickets were fined.

Meanwhile, 1,380 major frauds and 4,605 minor offences by conductors were detected during 132,656 mobile investigations carried out in buses in the same year by these officials, Gunasekera said.

Statistical data of the Central Investigation Unit of the SLTB disclosed that the amount of revenue collected from raids in 2011 was Rs 1,742,379 and the total revenue collected in 2012 was Rs 1,925,918.

An increase of Rs 183,539 in revenue was recorded last year compared to 2011, SLTB Special Investigation Unit Director Upali Gunasekera said.

A huge amount of income is deprived to the SLTB due to fraud, corruption and malpractice. Raids and inspections have being intensified to mitigate this, he said.
