Extraction rate must on wheat product wrappers

The Health Ministry has made it compulsory to indicate the extraction rate of wheat flour -- or wheat bran percentages -- in the wrappers of wheat flour products.

The ministry has taken this step to increase the nutritional value of wheat flour products. The people are requested to buy wheat flour products with a higher percentage of wheat bran and to refrain from buying the products that do not indicate this rate. The ministry in a release said this indication should be considered a social obligation.

Health Services Director General Dr Palitha Mahipala has instructed wheat four production companies to take steps in this regard.
