South Asia's tallest Standing Buddha
Statue is to be built in Sri Lanka. The statue with a height
of 180 feet is to be built close to the Kottawa- Makumbura
ancient temple. The statue will be positioned to face the
Southern Expressway and construction work will begin on
Vesak Poya Day. A discussion in this regard was held under
the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees

External Affairs Deputy Minister
Neomal Perera, led the Sri Lanka delegation, which
participated at the inauguration of Pope Francis I in the
Vatican City on March 19. Aviation Deputy Minister Sarath
Kumara Gunaratne and MP and Chief Opposition Whip John
Amaratunga also participated. The deputy minister while
carrying a special message
from President Mahinda Rajapaksa, also had the opportunity
to greet the new Pontiff and receive his blessings. Deputy
Minister Perera also met the Sri Lanka community leaders in
Italy along with other members of Sri Lanka delegation and
held a discussion with them at the embassy to identify their
issues and offered solutions to most of them. |

The first installment of Rs 20,000 to
construct houses out of the 100,000 promised to people
living under the poverty line was handed over to 700 war
affected families in the Batticaloa district. The function
was presided by Batticaloa district secretary P S M Charles.

A health camp and free distribution
of reading glasses to the needy was held in the Sri

The annual festival of Koddaimunai,
Punnaiyampathy, Batticaloa Maha Mariyamman Temple which is
in progress, held its five chariot procession through the
main street of Batticaloa. Five deities in gaily decorated
chariots were drawn by devotees. The water cutting ceremony
will be held today, when for the first time the chariot of
the main deity will be drawn across the new Kallady bridge
