Wesley fight back to beat Antonians

A superb second half rally by Wesley College Colombo helped them to score a superb 32 points(three goals, one try and two penalties) to 17 (two goals and a penalty) win over St. Anthony's College Kandy in their Schools under 20 segment one match played at Longden Place on Friday after trailing by 10 - 17 at the breather.

The lads from Kandy, who came into the match as underdogs came up with a fine display in the first half which rattled the Wesleyites. But the lads from Campbell Park, got their act together in the second half to add 22 points. Skipper Rahul de Silva and Winger Sajith Ariyawansa played a major role in Wesley's success. Ariyawansa scored two splendid tries while Skipper Rahul de Silva scored two tries and fired across two penalties in addition to three conversions which gave him a personal tally of 22 points which contributed hugely to Wesley's victory.

The Wesleyites remained unbeaten having scored a sensational 23 - 22 win over defending champions Isipathana seven days earlier and should be a force to be reckoned with this season.

Royal fail to impress

Royal College Colombo scored an unimpressive 13 points (two tries, one penalty) to 7 ( one goal) win over Kingswood College in their Singer league under 20 segment one match played at Royal Sports Complex on Saturday after leading 8 - 7 at the breather.

The lads from Reid Avenue once again failed to live up to expectations despite winning an abundance of "good ball" in the set scrums through the slick hooking of Jabbar and excellent jumping in the line outs by Yasuon Weerasooriya. But the Royal threes failed to penetrate the Kingswood defence spilling passes at crucial moments or being tackled in posession by their opponents.

The Royalists also lacked fitness as they do not have a proper fitness trainer and lost the services of Centre Asman Khan and Winger Udesh Ranaweera through injury. They also missed the services of Vice Captain Shuayb Muthaliph due to injury and winger Nimshan Jayawardena who received a red card in the match against Science.

Winger Udesh Irandha and Number Eight Pasindu Perera scored a try each for Royal with Skipper Rimzi Jamaldeen putting over a 30 metre penalty just before the breather.

Prop Forward Priyankara scored the solitary try for the losers with Fly Half N.Perera adding the extra points.

Trinity in hard fought win

Trinity College Kandy staved off a fierce challenge from Science College Mount Lavinia to emerge victorious by 18 points ( one goal, one try, two penalties) to 11 (one try, two penalties) in their singer schools under 20 segment one match played at Mount Lavinia on Saturday after leading 8 - 0 at lemons.

Giant Killers Science College paid the penalty of trying to run the ball even in their own "25" as they came up with a solid defence by the Trinitians. Trinity went ahead through a penalty from a difficult angle by Fly Half Tharinda Ratwatte and increased their lead through an unconverted try by Winger Rukshan Sasmin to lead 8 - 0.

After resumption, the Trinity lions went ahead further through a fine try by Centre Lochana Girihagama with Tharinda Ratwatte adding the extra points to make it 15 - 0. Science fought back and reduced the deficit through a penalty by Chathura Gomes. But the lads from Kandy went ahead further when Tharinda Ratwatte fired across a 45 metre penalty for Trinity to lead 18 - 3. The lads from Mount Lavinia staged a superb fight back in the last 10 minutes. First Chathura Gomes put over a 30 metre penalty and then flanker Lasindu fell over for an unconverted try to make it 18 - 11, but Trinity's defence held on to give them a hard fought 18 - 11 win.

Peterites in resounding win

St.Peter's College Bambalapitiya staged a superb fightback to beat traditional rivals St.Joseph's College Colombo by 43 points ( five goals , one try, one penalty) to 15 (three tries) to retain the Fr.Basil Wiratunga Shield at Longden Place on Saturday.

The Josephians came up with a gallant display in the first half to take a 15 - 12 lead through tries by Stefan Gregory, Skipper Jason Melder and Dulip Fernando to which the Peterites replied with tries by Centre Dilanka Perera and Kevin Dickson with Jerome Canute making one conversion and putting over penalty.

The Peterites dominated play completely in the second half scoring four tries through Anuradha Herath, Shenal Aponso, Senera Premawardena and Skipper Shan Weerakkody with Jerome Canute who was in fine kicking form converting all four tries and firing across a penalty.
