Thailand assists restoration of ancient temple in Sri Lanka

In commemorating the 260th anniversary of the re-establishment of
Siam Nikaya in Sri Lanka and the arrival of Upali Maha Thera of Siam,
Poldej Worachat, the Thailand Ambassador in Sri Lanka handed over a
donation of Rs. 825,423.03 to Chief Incumbent of Ranwella ancient temple
Ven. Galagama Sugathawansa Thera for restoration of the first Sinhala
printing press and the residential quarters of the temple.
The event was organized in the presence of External Affairs Minister
Prof. G. L. Peiris, at the External Affairs Ministry on March 22.
The ancient Ranwella temple in Kathaluwa, Ahangama was damaged in a
fire on November 19, 2012 and the printing press that printed the first
Sinhala newspaper Lankalokaya was severely damaged in the blaze. The
press has been a gift from the Kingdom of Thailand .
The donation was arranged by the Thailand Foreign Affairs Ministry at
the request of the Chief Incumbent of the Ranwella Ancient Temple. |
