Arrested for illegally mining gems
STF officers from the Horana camp and a team of officers from the
Ratnapura Gem and Jewellery Authority raided a location at Seethawaka
Ganga in the Seethawaka Investment Zone and arrested two suspects who
were illegally mining gems using compressors.
The Police also seized a large stock of implements used in the
illegal act. Further investigations are continuing.
Bus passenger nabbed with heroin
Fort Police arrested a passenger with 7.690 kilogrammes of heroin
wrapped in four packets at the Kandy departure terminal of the Central
Transport Board bus station, Pettah.
The suspect, a resident of Mannar, was produced before the Colombo
Magistrate's Court.
Bus plunges into paddy field injuring 13
Thirteen passengers were hospitalized when a semi luxury private bus
plying form Colombo to Vavuniya skidded off the road and overturned at
Madatugama in Dambulla on Tuesday around 7.30 am.
The injured including school and university students were admitted to
Dambulla and Kekirawa hospitals.
Initial investigations revealed that the bus after taking passengers
from Madatugama halt , travelled about 300 metres and suddenly veered
off the road and plunged into a paddyfield where it overturned.
One dead , five injured in grenade attack
Tissamaharama Police commenced a search operation to arrest a suspect
who fled the scene after an incident where a person was killed and five
others hospitalised when a grenade was thrown at Uduwila, Tissamaharama
early Tuesday.
Investigations revealed that two men had tried to assault the suspect
when he threw the grenade at the group on a bridge in Uduwila. The body
was sent to the Hambantota hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Suspects nabbed with loot
Three suspects wanted in connection with five house breaking
incidents in Dankotuwa and Balangoda were arrested by the Chilaw Anti
Vice Squad on Tuesday.
Police also seized part of the loot, including a laptop computer,
four mobile phones and three digital cameras.
They were produced before the Marawila Magistrate by the Dankotuwa
Police.
Arrested with cannabis
The Welikada Police on Tuesday evening arrested a 35-year-old suspect
with 10 kgs of cannabis in his possession at Madinnagoda.
He was produced before the Aluthkade No 1 magistrate court.
Wanted suspects netted
Four suspects wanted in connection with snatching a gold chain worth
Rs 60,000 and robbing Rs 10,000 from a woman on March 2, were arrested
by the Marawila Police with the gold chain in their possession on
Tuesday.
The Alawwa Police on the same day arrested a suspect who snatched a
gold chain worth Rs 65,000.
The 33-year-old suspect, a sweet seller in trains had snatched the
chain from a woman at Alawwa railway station.
He was produced before the Polgahawela magistrate court.
More muzzle loaders seized
The Bulathsinghala Police on Tuesday evening arrested five suspects
with five muzzle loaders in their possession.
They were produced before the Mathugama magistrate court.
Man arrested with artefacts
The Diyatalawa Police arrested a suspect with a stock of
archaeologically significant artefacts including a knife case embedded
with a carving of a dragon, a designed knife made of horns, a leather
knife case and an iron sphere in his possession at his house in
Dodamwatte on Tuesday.
He was produced before the Bandarawela magistrate court. |
