Plans to sink agricultural wells in NWP

The North Western Provincial Agriculture Ministry has made
arrangements to sink 500 agricultural wells in Kurunegala and Puttalam
districts this year. Provincial Agriculture Minister D B Herath said the
agri - wells are constructed in the province for farmers to cultivate
during the drought.
The wells are to be sunk on the recommendations of Farmer
Organisations in the province. Rs 50 million will be invested on this
project, he said.
Insecticides for farmers

Insecticide bottles were distributed among Divineguma beneficiaries
at Beliatta DS area at the Beliatta divisional secretariat office by
Hambantota district Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa recently.
The Southern Development Authority spent Rs 2,85,000 for this
purpose.
Minister donates lifesaving items

Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera donated a boat, an
engine and 20 life protection kits to the Blue Sergeant Lifesaving and
Water Sports Club, Tangalle at a function at Pareviwella beach. The
items cost Rs. 500,000.
Resources depleting in Kalametiya lagoon

Resources of Kalametiya lagoon situated in Tangalle DS area are being
depleted due to unruly elements who are eager to earn money.
There was a developed fishing industry in the lagoon prior to 1970
where a big prawn harvest was yielded, the fishing community in the area
said.
Later there was a change of salinity and the fishing industry was
badly hit.
This lagoon consists of a bird sanctuary, sandy beaches, turtle
nesting ground and a mangrove forest. The area has high potential for
tourism but it is being exploited by unruly elements.
Residents call for moves by relevant authorities to minimize resource
depletion.
Paddy not purchased at certified price in Kataragama

A state institution in Kataragama DS area does not purchase paddy at
the certified price. Instead, private sector salesmen ruthlessly harass
farmers, said Govi Sanvidana representatives of Kataragama.
They said paddy is bought at Rs 25 by the private sector while the
certified price is Rs 35. But there is no official to intervene and
provide relief to the farmers, they said.
The farmers said the only PMB paddy purchasing complex is situated at
Weerawila which is about 40 kilometres away. To transport paddy to this
purchasing centre is an arduous task because they have to incur a heavy
expenditure for the transport of paddy, they said.
The farmers request authorities concerned to set up a mobile paddy
purchasing centre at Kataragama to prevent farmers being harassed.
Ruhuna farmers to benefit from Mattala airport

Mihin Lanka and Srilankan Airlines will conduct flights to the
Mahinda Rajapaksa International Airport at Mattala after it is opened by
President Mahinda Rajapaksa on March18.
These airlines will conduct flights to different destinations around
the globe via the Mattala airport.
Executive official of Mihin Lanka Kapila Chandrasena said the
Buddhist population in Ruhuna will be able to visit Buddha Gaya by Mihin
Lanka flights from Mattala.
Civil Aviation Minister Priyankara Jayaratna said mostly the people
of Ruhuna will enjoy benefits as a result of the Mattala airport.
He said the farming community in Ruhuna will be able to export their
produce via Mattala airport.

IDeA Night - 2013
The Department of Accounting, University of Kelaniya will hold its
Annual IDeA Night today (14), from 6.00 p.m to 8.30 p.m at Hotel
Galadari, Colombo, providing an opportunity for students to network with
professionals and also providing companies to showcase their areas of
expertise. Internship providers to the university (Audit and Non Audit),
industry experts and academic staff of the university have been invited
for the event. Apart from that around 100 fresh graduates who have
completed the Bachelor of Business Management (Accountancy) Special

Farmers take to green gram

Farmers at Ridiyagama in the Ambalantota Divisional Secretariat area
have taken steps to cultivate green gram according to Hambantota
Additional District Secretary W.A.Dharmasiri. About 800 acres will be
brought under green gram cultivation. Farmers will be able to derive an
additional income as a result of this, he said.
Buddhist talk
Dr Kosala de Silva will deliver a public talk in English on
Meditation while being in the society on March 16 at 4.30 pm at Maithree
Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.
Science Day
The annual Science Day organised by the Advanced Level Science stream
students of Kiribathgoda Viharamaha Devi Balika Vidyalaya under the
guidance of the Principal and staff will be held today at the school
premises.
The chief guest will be Professor Namal Priyantha of Peradeniya
University.

Thilakasena Sahadandu (formerly of Govt. Health Service), father of
the Daily Island Editor Prabath Sahabandu passed away March 12. His
remains lie at No 131, Hapugala, Galle (on Wakwella Road 4km from Galle
town). Cortege leaves residence at 4.pm for burial at Dadalla cemetery
today. Sahabnadu leaves behind wife Karuna, and four children. |
