The fines imposed on ticketless train passengers have been increased
to Rs 2,500. A Sri Lanka Railways spokesman said fines were increased
from Rs 900 to Rs 2,500 as a result of the percentage of passengers
travelling without tickets in trains has been on the rise over the past
few years.
Ticketless travellers will also have to pay double the amount of his
or her train fare from the departure point to the destination.
The spokesman said if a person travels in the first class compartment
on second class or third class tickets, he will also be fined.
He said such persons will be subjected to pay the fine amount and two
times the ticket price.
Earlier, a commuter traveling in the third class compartment without
a ticket had to pay a fine of Rs 900, a second class compartment
commuter Rs 1,200 and a first class commuter Rs 1,650.
A passenger travelling without ticket or travelling in the first
class compartment on second class or third class ticket ticket will now
be fined Rs 2,500 plus double the amount of his or her train fares.
