Five DIGs transferred

Inspector General of Police N K Illangakoon approved the transfer of five Deputy Inspector Generals with immediate effect due to service requirements. DIG Vass Gunawardena has been transferred to Gampaha district from Ratnapura while Gampaha DIG A Sarath Kumara has been transferred to the Kurunegala district.

Minister aims to bring down prison inmate number

It is expected to bring down the number of prison inmates from 26,000 to 15,000 by the end of 2014, said Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Minister Chandrasiri Gajadheera. The government policy is to establish rehabilitation centres to reform wrong doers rather than to establish more prisons, he said.

Police foil human smuggling attempt

Forty four persons, including five women and six children from Jaffna, Killinochchi, Mullaitivu, Kayts, Akkaraipattu and Puttalam who were about to migrate to Australia by a trawler yesterday morning from Kudamaduwella, Thoduwawa in Negombo, were apprehended by Marawila Police.

Lankan smuggling gold nabbed in India
