Navy vigil on illegal fishing

Sri Lanka Navy announced they have taken measures to maintain strict
vigilance on illegal fishing to provide protection for the livelihoods
of fishermen.
SLN's action has been instrumental in safeguarding fish breeding
grounds and related marine resources which are required for better fish
catch in the seas around the country. SLNS Vijaya attached to the
North-western Naval Command has been able to apprehend 545 illegal nets
which include 411 cage nets, 126 Thangus nets, four Surukku nets and two
Laila nets in Kalpitiya area last month.
The naval personnel attached to the SLNS Wijaya have also apprehended
five fiber glass dingies, six (25 HP) OBMs, five face masks, nine
snorkels, 15 fins, five regulators, three back packs, 25 scuba cylinders
and three kerosene cans during their raids. |
