Balangoda Magistrate and District Judge Ranjani Attygalle imposed a
Rs 25,000 fine on a man who pleaded guilty to possessing 1,610
milligrams of Wallapatta, a rare herbal plant.

garbage recycling centre in the area.
Adulteration testing apparatus for kitul jaggery

An adulteration testing apparatus for kitul jaggery and treacle was
invented by the Industrial Technology Institute of Sri Lanka, director
Sirimal Premakumara said.
He said he invented this apparatus in association with senior
research scientist M P P S Somasiri.
He said the potential of the kitul tree still remains untapped.
Premakumara and Somasiri said as a result of the invention of this
apparatus, consumers will be able to obtain pure kitul jaggery and
treacle.
Two injured in crash

A CTB bus plying from Valaichchenai collided with a motorcycle on the
Batticaloa- Chenkalady highway at Kommathurai injuring two on Friday.
The two, residents of Valaichchenai and Vantharumoolai were first
admitted to Chenkalady Hospital and later transferred to the Batticaloa
Teaching Hospital.
Eravur Police are investigating.
Appeal
E.L.G. Chithra Kanthi, 55, of 25/10, 3rd Lane, Kaldemulla, Moratuwa,
has been diagnosed as having an end stage kidney failure by Dr. Anura
Hewageegana, Nephrologist, National Institute for Nephorology, Dialysis
and Transplantation.
The estimated cost of the transplant is around Rs 300,000.
Kanthi appeals to the public to contribute to her cause by remitting
contributions to A/C No. 080200261105450, People’s Bank, Ratmalana
branch.
She also appeals to a kidney donor with blood group O+ or O-.

S.M. Vasantha Sripali, 45, a father of three, of D103/1, Gonagamuwa,
Kithulgala, is suffering from an acute heart ailment. Doctors have
recommended an urgent heart surgery to save his life.
Sripali says the surgery and allied treatment and preparation is
estimated to cost Rs. 950,000. He says he is unable to foot the bill due
to his financial plight. He requests the public to assist his cause by
sending financial contributions possible to help expedite the surgery.

NHDA saves millions

The National Housing Development Authority saved Rs 227,690 million
of recurrent expenditure in 2012, said Construction, Engineering
Services, housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa.
The estimated recurrent expenditure from the budget 2012 was
Rs.1,381,621 million and the NHDA spent Rs.1,153,931. The NHDA
management could save this amount as a result of the proper management.
Flag Day on Mahasivarathri Day
The World Saiva Council (Sri Lanka Branch) will hold its 'Flag Day'
on March 10 (Mahasivarathri Day) at Bambalapitiya New Kathiresan hall
presided by World Saiva Council President K Thayaparan.
The ceremony will commence at 8.00 am with poojas. Temple Trustee and
Secretary of the World Saiva Council (Sri Lanka) Dr M Kathirgamanathan,
'Vidaikodi Chelvar' Sinnadurai Dhanabalaa will also participate.
Carpenter killed by falling pillar

A pillar of a building under construction in Lakshapathiyage watta at
Meddawatta, Matara fell on a carpenter killing him instantly.
The tragedy occurred last week. The victim was Punchimanage Palitha
Sunil (53) of Kahagala, Kamburupitiya.
The inquest into the death was conducted by the Inquirer into Sudden
Deaths Matara, T M Lalith de Silva at the Matara hospital premises.
The deceased's wife S. Malanie gave evidence assisted by PC 18568 K H
Wasantha of the Matara Police.
Assistant JMO of the Matara Hospital Dr K H Padmathilake conducted
the autopsy based on medical evidence.
The inquirer returned a verdict of accidental death due to serious
injuries to the skill and the cerebrum.
