The Batticaloa Municipal Council, Security Forces personnel, the Health Department and the Rural Development Society launched an anti-dengue campaign. Nearly 810 dwellings were inspected and cases filed against 29 persons for having dengue breeding grounds.

A meeting for PHIs, Health Department officials, security officers and Municipal Council labourers was held under the chairmanship of Deputy Mayor A Georgepillai last week.

The Deputy Mayor emphasised the need to keep Batticaloa clean and tidy with a large number of local and foreign tourists visiting the district.

He said measures will be taken to clean all drains blocked following the recent rains and urged the public to keep their homes and surroundings clean.

The public were made aware on cleaning dengue breeding grounds through the public address system and leaflets.

Forty nine dengue victims have been identified in Batticaloa from January up to date, sources said.

The public were told not to dump garbage on the road and to keep the environment and drains clean.
