The education policy and vision in the Uva Province is praiseworthy
and is an example to the rest of the country although there are
weaknesses in the education sector at national level, Secretary to the
President Lalith Weeratunge said.
He made these comments during a discussion at the Uva Provincial
Council auditorium regarding the progress of the Uva Province Education
sector recently.
Weeratunge said the level of education system in Uva which was very
poor in the past, has achieved much progress in recent times to notch
the second best place in the island. “This is a major victory,” he said.
Weeratunge said Uva Province has a good vision regarding the
education policy. He said the Chief Minister was providing proper
guidance to education officials in maintaining the quality of education.
“Teachers have to play a pivotal role with regard to the education of
children. There should also be proper planning and a good rapport
between teachers and students,” Weeratunge said.
Weeratunge said the mother tongue should be taught to a child during
primary education.
“Entering university is useless if a child does not know the mother
tongue. The lack of knowledge in the national language would also be a
problem for students,” he said.
There should also be an education plan to cater to children dropping
out of school, Weeratunge said.
He said he would bring to the President’s notice that the education
system in Uva should be introduced as a model to the other provinces.
Uva Chief Minister Shasheendra Rajapaksa said physical and
educational development should go hand in hand to develop a region or
the nation. Gaining results from funds utilised in education was a time
consuming process, he said. |
