Sinthuya wins triple crown at Independence Day TT

A girl from Jaffna, S.Sinthuya of Jaffna Union College walked away with the Most Outstanding Player award of the Independence Day Celebrations All Island (unranked) Table Tennis Championship 2013 worked off at the S.Thomas’ Indoor Stadium, Mt Lavinia recently. Sinthuya bagged a triple crown winning all three titles contested, women’s singles, under 21 and under 18 singles.

It was has been a remarkable achievement for the Jaffna lass who travelled over 800 kms to take part in the tournament. Sinthuya is considered to be the best TT player Jaffna has produced in recent times and has won many titles earlier at the Jaffna District and North and East TT Championships.

Tharindu Perera of Isipathana College, Colombo was adjudged the boys’ MOP who clinched the men’s singles and under 21 titles.

The tournament was conducted under the Asian / German Sports Exchange programme (AGSEP) in collaboration with the TT Association of Sri Lanka (TTASL), Jaffna District TT Association, and Vavuniya District TT Association. It was a tremendous success, particularly to promote and foster relationship between the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim Communities.

Altogether 432 players took part and for the first time in Sri Lanka, 65 players from Jaffna District and 55 players from Vavuniya District participated in this event totaling 149 participants from North and East including coaches, teachers and masters in charge.

The tournament saw 14 singles events on the cards for boys and girls under-8, under-10, under-12, under-15, under-18, under-21 including open men’s and women’s singles.

The main objective of this event was to give amateur paddlers an opportunity to show their talents, especially those who are from outstations.


Winners of the tournament with chief guest Pesi Pestonjee, the Senior Director of Abans (Pvt) Ltd, Vice President of TTASL Chandana Perera and other officials are seen in the picture.

The championship was sponsored by Abans Ltd while Nilaveli Peace Village and Aquarius Beach Hotel also supported the event as co-sponsors. Thanks to the kind gesture of sponsors the organizers were able to provide everything free for the North and East participants including food, accommodation, transport and entry fees.

A high standard of sportsmanship was shown by the Jaffna, Vavuniya and players from South. The AGSEP in collaboration with the TTASL took all efforts to uplift the standard of TT in North and East by conducting coaching camps and tournaments regularly. Many of the coaching camps were sponsored by Pesi Pestonjee, the Senior Director of Abans and the former President of the Board of Control for Table Tennis in Sri Lanka.
