Spectacles for the poor

The Senerath Foundation of Narammala distributed 11,000 spectacles
among low income families in the North Western Province last year. The
Foundation also presented educational equipment among 182 students
affected by floods recently. Foundation organiser Shamal Prasanna
Senarath said he hopes to present 100,000 spectacles before 2015.
Woman with kasipuu fined Rs 20,000

A woman who pleaded guilty to possessing 16 bottles of kasippu was
fined Rs 20,000 by Mahara - Kadawata Magistrate Sahan Mapa Bandara.
The woman admitted that she has committed the same offence on two
previous occasions. Kadawata Police prosecuted.
Belgium tourist drowns at sea

A Belgium national tourist died while sea bathing at Bentota
recently. The deceased was Christian B Hold, 55. At the time of the
incident, his wife was also bathing nearby. Her husband has drowned
immediately following a rough wave, Police say.

Dayani Malkanthi (48) of Thalawakelle needs a live kidney
transplantation to save her life.
Her blood group is ‘O’ Positive and the donor of the kidney has to be
of the same group.

Former UGC Chairman freed from contempt

The Supreme Court yesterday discharged former University Grants
Commission (UGC) Chairman Gamini Samaranayake from contempt charges
brought against him for failure to comply with a Court order.
The order is connection with the time bar set to formulate the
Z-score in respect of this years admissions to the universities.
The case was terminated.
The Bench comprised Chief Justice Mohan Peris PC, Justice P.A.
Ratnayake and Justice Priyasath Dep.
Religious programme
A spiritual blessings programme to protect the country from disasters
is organised on World Social Justice Day tomorrow from 9 am to 10.30 am
at Fort in front of WTC.
The programme is organised by the Savumia Youth Foundation held under
